SPECIAL MEMO TO CLIENTS ISSUE 25-009 – February 11, 2025

Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Will be Expanded and/or Increased on March 12

President Trump issued two executive orders on February 10, 2025, that will expand and increase Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.  In 2018 additional tariffs of 25% were placed on steel and 10% on aluminum from all countries.  Later the U.S. imposed quotas for steel and steel derivatives from certain countries and for aluminum and aluminum derivatives for the United Kingdom.  President Trump announced that the quotas and other exemptions were not controlling the volume of imports and issued new orders to go into effect on March 12, 2025. These orders include a 25% tariff on imports of steel and steel derivatives from all countries.  They also increase the 10% tariff on aluminum and aluminum derivatives to 25%.

There were alternative agreements made for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Community, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. These will all be terminated. There are existing approved exclusions from the tariffs, and they will be terminated.  They will not be extended/ The White House put out a fact sheet on these changes and it can be found at: https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/02/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-restores-section-232-tariffs/
