SPECIAL MEMO TO CLIENTS ISSUE 25-012 – March 03, 2025

Mexico and Canada Additional Tariffs Will Not Be Postponed at This Time

On Sunday, President Trump told the press that the additional tariffs for Canada and Mexico that were postponed until March 4, 2025, will not be extended again and will go into effect at 12:01 AM on March 4, 2025.  He also stated that he will increase the additional tariffs on China products from 10% to 20% and has issued an executive order for the increase that can be found at: Further Amendment to Duties Addressing the Synthetic Opioid Supply Chain in the People’s Republic of China – The White House. This order did not include an effective date.  Since it is not tied to the Mexico and Canada increases, we believe the effective date must first be published.

De Minimis Privileges Restored to Canada and Mexico Products

President Trump had temporarily restored the use of de minimis filing (shipments under $800.00) for Canada and Mexico products while the additional tariffs were postponed. The President has issued two executive orders allowing the duty-free release under de minimis for both Canada and Mexico products even with the additional Tariffs postponement ending.  The two orders can be found at: Amendment to Duties to Address the Flow of Illicit Drugs across our Northern Border – The White House and Amendment to Duties to Address the Situation at our Southern Border – The White House
