Possible 100% Additional Duties on Chinese Goods
On October 9, 2025, China announced the imposition of large-scale export controls on almost every product made in China. This includes rare earth metals. These export controls will affect every country.
In a social media post, President Trump announced his intent to respond with an additional 100% tariff on all Chinese products, November 1. As of today, we have seen no formal announcements from the White House implementing these tariffs, and reports indicate that Trump could ease his stance. However, if these tariffs do go into effect, Carmichael will be ready by taking additional steps for our clients.
Starting tomorrow, October 21, Carmichael will contact our importers on every shipment of Chinese products to confirm if they wish us to hold back the transmission of entries with the potential 100% duty. This additional duty may make goods too expensive to import, and we will verify with our importers if the entries are to be filed. Normally, we prefile entries 5 days before the arrival of the vessel, but with the higher duty rates, we need to be sure an importer will still want the goods. The decision to file these entries will be a collaborative decision. Any entries where transmission is held will still be prepared in the usual fashion, only transmission will be held.
We will follow this process until we can confirm that the duties will not be assessed. If you have any questions, please give us a call.
