President Trump Grants Exemptions for Some of Canada and Mexico Tariffs

Today President Trump announced that he was issuing two executive orders granting a temporary exemption from additional tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada that qualify for entry under the United States-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement (USMCA). These exemptions will become effective at 12:01 AM on March 7. The orders also reduce the 25% tariff on potash to 10% whether it qualifies for USMCA treatment. These exemptions are temporary and are set to expire on April 2, 2025.

It is estimated that these exemptions will cover about 50% of all imports from Mexico and about 38% of all imports from Canada. Importers should act now to confirm that their products do qualify for USMCA for any claims being made.
